    • Today I was looking at the Blast! Library ASM source, and I noticed several things that were done inefficiently, so I decided to make my own graphics library for QB. So far, I have made a 16-bit POKE that is 3x faster than QB's 8-bit POKE and a PSET that is 3x faster than QB's PSET. I've also made fadeblack and fadewhite routines. I should have a partial library ready for release in a week. At that time I will release it on my site. I'm hoping this library will help programmers make faster QB games than previously possible. Check my msgboard and projects section for more info. Also, one new link has been added, today: Iron-Tek Productions.

    • The Mystical Journey has once again been updated: The first update corrected several bugs. These bugs included the math in the fight scenes, slow fading on some computers, faster battles, and the color the enemies flash during battle. The second update corrected some errors caused by the update of the math in the fight scenes. Also, it removed the delay between the time a game is loaded and the time when the character is first shown on the map screen. TMJ demo version 1.23 is now available for download. I have also decided that I will not add any more to the first plug-in for TMJ for July, but August's plug-in will include three new levels instead of two! • Jun 21st, 1998
    • There is now a new page on the web site under "The Mystical Journey." It provides TMJ plug-in info and downloads as well as the newest version of TMJ demo for download. TMJ has once again been updated. Now, TMJ demo v1.12 is ready for download!
  • Jun 20th, 1998
    • I've added back arrows to my web site on most of the pages so viewers don't need to keep using the back arrow on the browser. Thr web site is now up on QBT50; and VirtuaSoft has been named Future Software's "spotlight of the month" site! Also, two new tutorials are being planned. I have also corrected the "file not found" error that some of people had encountered while playing TMJ. But the biggest news is that I've decided to make monthly add-ons to TMJ!!! These add-ons will include new villages, new enemies, new cinemas, and possibly, new characters! Expect each first add-on by the first of each month.
  • Jun 19th, 1998
    • I've started making updates on TMJ, following the suggestions of people who have tested it. The following were updated:
      • 1. When you die in a battle, it now sends you back to the title screen instead of just sending you back to the map.
      • 2. There are now backgrounds on the map screen from the various battles.
      • 3. There is an option to skip the beginning intro.
      • 4. An error was corrected on the stat menu that said "input past end of file" whenever the options were changed before saving.
      • 5. An error was corrected with the cinema scenes not accepting the custimized colors.
      • 6. Now, during cinema scenes, the words "Cinema sequence" are displayed at the bottom of the screen to let the player know when a cinema scene is in progress.
      • 7. The enemies now flash white in the fight scene to signal an attack.
The website has also been updated. Now, all screen shots are low-quality JPGs instead of high quality, so load time for the site should be 1/3 of what it was.
  • Jun 18th, 1998
    • The demo to The Mystical Journey has been finished ahead of schedule! Try it now. Give me any feedback and help me with bugs because when I enter it in QBT50's Qlympics, I want it to be the best I can possibly make it.
  • Jun 17th, 1998
    • I made various updates to my web site under tutorials, links, and TMJ, but nothing big. The big news is that I have implemented "cinema" scenes into The Mystical Journey! Now, TMJ will have an animated intro! The engine I use for the cinema scenes is basically the same as the one used in the rest of the game except that it reads from a file instead of the keyboard for character motion and interaction. I'm expecting that the demo for TMJ will be finished by next Sunday.
  • Jun 16th, 1998
    • The "files" section of the web site now has a new category: "FakeOSs." This new category includes files that are meant to mimic operating systems in humorous ways. I have already placed two of my own files in this category to start it off: FORM and ASC. I have also made minor updates to many of my programs that are on this web site. The graphics library has also been updated so that the texture-mapping and fonts are slightly faster.
  • Jun 15th, 1998
    • The "Tutorials" section of the web site has been updated because several people have been asking how to load a BMP into QBASIC with its palette for use in games. The new tutorial is called "Debabelizing." Now, the section of this web site devoted to The Mystical Journey has a counter. Also, the graphics library now has another texture-mapping routine that now works in all 16-colors per pixel graphics screens. Thanks for the idea, Ben Kittridge! :)
  • Jun 14th, 1998>
    • Today, I have updated the links and The Mystical Journey->Screen Shots section. Now, the links have images or banners of titles of web site. The screen shots from The Mystical Journey are now lower quality images so you don't have to wait forever to see the shots appear. This will cause some fuzziness on the shots, but I decided that loadtime was a more important issue.

    • Now, there is 3D text on the home page, a guest book, and a message board.

    • The Mystical Journey has progressed tremendously, today. I added a stat screen with configurable menu colors for the game, a hotel, new fight screen mechanics, and several tiny improvements. The graphics library has again been updated. It now has a border sub that can place a frame around a picture.

    • I finally added character stats to The Mystical Journey. This allows the character to have HP, MP, etc. Now, the battles are much more realistic. At the rate I am progressing in this game, I should have a demo done in a few weeks! My graphics library now has a new sub for blending palettes. This allows for the gradual changing between two palettes.

    • Today, I have added NPCs to The Mystical Journey and have developed a new linking format to free 45Kb of RAM for Mystical.exe and Villages.exe. The NPCs each present their own remarks like those in Final Fantasy or Zelda games do, and they wander aimlessly around the villages. I have chosen to allow the player to walk through the NPCs because I know how irritating it can get when an NPC blocks the character in a corner in other RPGs. I have been working some on the wave player that is mentioned under "Projects," and I am expecting to have it finished in a few weeks.

    • Over the last few days, the web site has been constantly updated a little at a time. But nothing has been changed enough to give an update under the "What's New?" section until today: The new fight screens have been added to "Mystical Journey->screen shots." Shown on the shots are the battle interface, various enemies, the inferno fire magic, and the new backgrounds. Also added to the web site is a game I made around two years ago. This game stars O.J. Simpson on a kniving spree. Nothing special happens in the game; it simply was posted to show how my games used to look.

    • Now that Fight is linked to The Mystical Journey's map screen, I deleted the old file that was previously on my web site. Also, Graphics.lib has been expanded to include fade white, fade black, fade from white, and fade from black subs. These will work in any screen mode that uses 8-bits or less per color as the ColorPalette sub does. I have also started work on a SVGA library for QB4.5 that allows for 8-bit, 16-bit, and 24-bit color modes! This should greatly help those programmers who are stuck on screens 9H and 13H for all their graphics. A demo of the library is available under the "download->graphics" section of the website. I have also decided that since The Mystical Journey is VirtuaSoft's biggest project ever, it should deserve a section all to its self on the web site. By the time you read this, MJ's section on the web site will already be under construction.

    • I have been working on The Mystical Journey for about two weeks and have finally learned how to program SVGA for my Cirrus Logic card! The Mystical Journey is rapidly progressing. Now, there is a complete village and two caves. I also have two more villages in the works as well as a castle. Random enemy battles have been linked to the map screen, and I am currently working on NPCs and more characters (currently 1) and more enemies (currently 7). The enemies are no longer discolored Moogles, but are scanned photos of actual animals! The backgrounds of the fight scenes are now scanned landscapes instead of tiled backgrounds made in tile32.bas (the tile-editor for The Mystical Journey).. Some new people have joined VirtuaSoft, as well. The current members are:
      • Danny Gump - President, Producer / Programmer of TMJ
      • Richard Russo - Vice President
      • John Bruckelmeyer - Artist of TMJ
      • Robbie Gump - Level Designer of TMJ
Also, as an anouncement that's off the subject, Richard Russo graduates from high school this week. Congraduations!

    • I've added several new programs to my web site, including portions to programs that are listed under Projects. The map screen and fight screen for The Mystical Journey are now downloadable as are the Star Wars vs. Star Trek select screen and HullBreach. Also, I've included screen shots for all projects, games, and graphics demos.

    • Welcome to my web site. I have been a programmer for roughly eight years and have learned many programming techniques during that time. Thus, I have decided to make this web site to share with other programmers the short-cuts and tricks I have learned during that time.

I have posted some of my programs on the web site so that others can learn from me, and I would really like to have anyone post their programs here, too, so that you can share your ideas, as well. To have me post your programs, simply e-mail me your program(s). The programs in the games, graphics, and sounds categories must be QBASIC or Quick BASIC files; whereas, the utility files can be either assembly or BASIC. I hope you enjoy my web site. Feel free to give me any suggestions on how to improve this page because this is my first time making a web site, so I am not yet too experienced designing one.
